Four-Day School Week

The Southern Boone County R-I School District is beginning the process to consider the possibility of implementing a four-day school week beginning with the 2026–2027 school year.

District officials say the move is part of a broader initiative to address teacher recruitment and retention, promote work-life balance and enhance student engagement and well-being.

“We know how hard our educators and staff work, and we are committed to supporting them,” said Superintendent Dr. Tim Roth. “Exploring a four-day school week is about recognizing the challenges of today’s educational environment and being proactive in finding ways to support our team while continuing to prioritize student learning.”

No changes will be made for the upcoming 2025–2026 school year. The district has emphasized that the exploration process will be thorough and transparent, involving multiple opportunities for community engagement and feedback before any decision is made.

“This is a significant decision, and we want to make sure it is a community conversation,” Roth said. “We’re just at the beginning of this process, and we need to hear from our staff, families and community members.”

The district has initiated surveys for both staff and parents to gather initial input. In the coming months, Southern Boone will host presentations and forums to share information and answer questions about the potential transition.

“Whatever direction we take, it must reflect the needs and values of our entire school community,” Roth added. “We’re committed to listening, learning and working together as we evaluate this idea.”

The Southern Boone Board of Education will ultimately make any decision regarding a transition to a four-day school week through a formal vote, following the feedback and analysis process.

Parents, staff and community members are encouraged to participate in the ongoing discussion by completing surveys and attending future presentations and forums. More information will be shared as the process continues.
