School Board Tables Decision

The Southern Boone County R-I School District Board of Education voted Monday evening to table a decision on transitioning to a four-day school week. As a result, the district will continue operating on a traditional five-day schedule for the 2026–2027 school year. The Board articulated several reasons for this motion:

Uncertainty in state funding, including potential revisions to the foundation formula and how funds are allocated to districts.

Need to evaluate the 169-day calendar option with the 2% incentive, which could help support salary increases.

The fact that there was insufficient data at this time to fully understand the impact of a four-day school week.

Desire to clearly outline all components of a potential transition before making a final decision.

Opportunity to explore additional strategies for improving overall teacher compensation.

“The Board emphasized that this approach ensures any decision made will be informed, sustainable, and in the best interest of students, staff, and the community,” said Board President Amy Begemann. “We appreciate all communication in person or via email that was shared with the Board to help inform our decision.”

As part of this continued work, the Board of Education will also be exploring additional options to support increased staff salaries and strengthen teacher recruitment and retention efforts.

District leaders will continue gathering feedback, reviewing data, and evaluating factors such as staffing considerations, student success, and family needs as discussions continue.

The district will provide updates as the conversation moves forward and encourages families, staff, and community members to remain engaged in future planning discussions.
