Congratulation to Southern Boone second grade student, Annaleigh Lohmann, who won first place in a nation-wide writing competition. The PBS KIDS Writers Contest is a national competition designed to promote the advancement of children’s reading skills through hands-on, active learning. The effort encourages children in kindergarten through third grade across the country to celebrate the power of creating stories and illustrations by submitting their own original works. The contest was coordinated by Watertown Public Broadcasting in New York. Lohmann was unable to attend the award ceremony on May 6 in New York due to short notice but will receive her award from the station soon. She and the 10 other winners will be honored during the month of May with special TV spots celebrating their achievements as young authors.

This week is Teacher Appreciation Week. This is a special time to honor the individuals who lend their passion and skills to educating the children in our community. Teachers show up each and every day, from the time students get off the school bus, to the time they arrive safely at home each afternoon. Educators are committed to ensuring that students have the tools they need to reach their full potential. We want to celebrate, acknowledge and appreciate the daily sacrifices teachers make for every child in our schools. For many of them, teaching is heart work. Teachers touch the hearts of students in a special way and make a lasting difference in their lives. We honor all teachers throughout our school district for going beyond the call of duty to make a positive impact on our students' learning and development. Thank you to our amazing teachers for everything they do for our students, our schools and our community.

Students in Mrs. Golightly's biology classes gained hands-on experience by modeling natural selection through the feeding patterns of birds. Through the "Battle of the Beaks" lab, students learned about possible reasons why natural selection occurs by trying to pick up a variety of "food" with different types of "beaks."
