Mrs. Toepke has been a sixth-grade English language arts and social studies teacher at Smithon Middle School in Columbia for the past 10 years. Students in Mrs. Rogers' middle school WINGS class have been welcoming artisans over the past few days as part of their unit of students on artisans. The guest speakers have included Tim Klippel, a professional leather worker; Bill Digennaro, a retired computer programmer, professor, and leather journal craftsman; and Cory Fischer, owner of RiverWood Designs, LLC, who creates hardwood and resin creations.

REMINDER: Effective today, the football/soccer field and track will be closed to the public. This area will remain closed all summer as construction crews install a new turf field, track, video scoreboard and additional new bleachers. A majority of the project is anticipated to be completed by the end of August. This project was made possible by voters in the Southern Boone School District approving the $3 million no-tax-increase bond issue during the April 2022 election.

Students in Ms. Dolph's first grade class have been practicing fluency and expression through Reader’s Theater. Earlier today, the students performed for their own class and then got to go see Beauty and the Beast Jr. put on by TRYPS Children’s Theater in Columbia.

Southern Boone High School Graduation will be on Sunday, May 21st, 2023 at 1:30 p.m. and will be held on the baseball/softball field. The graduation ceremony will be live-streamed on the Southern Boone Activities YouTube Channel. MORE INFO: www.sbschools.us/graduation

Congratulation to Southern Boone second grade student, Annaleigh Lohmann, who won first place in a nation-wide writing competition. The PBS KIDS Writers Contest is a national competition designed to promote the advancement of children’s reading skills through hands-on, active learning. The effort encourages children in kindergarten through third grade across the country to celebrate the power of creating stories and illustrations by submitting their own original works. The contest was coordinated by Watertown Public Broadcasting in New York. Lohmann was unable to attend the award ceremony on May 6 in New York due to short notice but will receive her award from the station soon. She and the 10 other winners will be honored during the month of May with special TV spots celebrating their achievements as young authors.

Heather Morgan, Michelle Ford and Emily Brown have completed their eMINTS training. These teachers have learned new strategies to use in the classroom and have earned the title of eMINTS Certified Teacher through the National eMINTS Center at the University of Missouri. eMINTS is a nationally recognized program that guides teachers in instructional techniques and integrating technology into the classroom to elevate learning for all.

Some students from the elementary and middle school have been participating in the Girls on the Run program over the past couple of months. On Saturday, the students competed in a 5K event in Columbia. You can learn more about the program at www.heartofmissourigirlsontherun.org.

Students in Mrs. Batye’s 5th Grade Eagle Time Class had the opportunity to “Teach the Class” a learned skill, hobby, game, etc. Students have learned how to make a clay bead bracelet, roping, life in Jamaica, frogs and knitting.

This week is Teacher Appreciation Week. This is a special time to honor the individuals who lend their passion and skills to educating the children in our community. Teachers show up each and every day, from the time students get off the school bus, to the time they arrive safely at home each afternoon. Educators are committed to ensuring that students have the tools they need to reach their full potential. We want to celebrate, acknowledge and appreciate the daily sacrifices teachers make for every child in our schools. For many of them, teaching is heart work. Teachers touch the hearts of students in a special way and make a lasting difference in their lives. We honor all teachers throughout our school district for going beyond the call of duty to make a positive impact on our students' learning and development.
